Canal Operations Modeling

Hydrocomp, Inc.

Canal systems contain check structures, wasteways, pumps, siphons, andre-regulating reservoirs. These facilities are operated to meet demandsfor water at turnouts in the system. Little margin for error exists whencanals are operated close to capacity. Imprecise pumping or gatesettings can result in insufficient water, or excess flows and stages inthe canal system. Operation of a canal requires forecasts of flows andstorage in the canal, given the projected water demands.Hydrocomp has developed a realtime model for workstation systems thatpredicts future canal hydraulic conditions. The model componentsrepresent the physical facilities in the canal system such as pumps andcheck structures.Planned operation of the canal is entered into the model using graphicaltechniques. The resulting future canal hydraulics are immediatelydisplayed. Alternate operations must also be tested to determine anoptimal operation to meet water demands. The model can predict canalhydraulic conditions for alternate operations within 10 to 30 seconds.
